About Mark

A lifetime Division 1 local, Councillor Mark Hammel was born and raised in the suburb of Alberton – an area he is deeply passionate about, and still calls home to this day.

The Hammels were one of the original families to settle on the Gold Coast, and have lived in Alberton since 1880. In fact, Cr Hammel is currently renovating the original farmhouse on the property built from timber felled by his great grandfather. At this home, he plans to one day raise his own family, like every generation of Hammels before him. After starting his professional career in surveying, business development and commercial real estate, Cr Hammel moved into a business management role with family-owned Australian waste management group, J.J. Richards and Sons.

Cr Hammel has a deep appreciation of farming in Australia. While he chose to not make farming his career, he counts himself incredibly fortunate to spend his free time in the sun working the land with his family to produce fresh produce including strawberries, sweet potatoes and sugar cane. Cr Hammel's parents still live in Alberton and run the family farming operation, and his brother and sister are long-time Gold Coast locals.

The Hammel family has always been strong contributors to the local community. Cr Hammel is continuing this tradition with his current roles as President of the Local Progress Association and Vice President of the Alberton Cricket Club.

I'd like to hear from you...

My wife Marg and I truly believe Mark has a genuine love and passion for this area. He is the kind of person we need to represent our views and help us protect the lifestyle we enjoy in Division 1.
Don Waters OAM, world-renowned artist, Jacobs Well
I have known Mark his entire life - the Hammel and Collard family have been friends for over a 100 years. Mark isn’t afraid of hard work and I know he will work harder than anyone else to be the strong voice for Division 1 we need.
Dave Collard, local business owner, Alberton
Mark is proud of farming in this region, but understands the challenges we are facing and the affect that is having on the Rocky Point farming community. I know that he will stand up for farming families and make sure their voices are heard.
Geoff Rossman, Rocky Point sugar cane farmer
